The SHCP recommends the following health kit supplies. Find a plastic box with good closure or silicone pouches that are sealable to keep in one place for easy access. You can purchase first-aid supplies for your kit at The Student Health Center Pharmacy and charge the items to your student bill.

Contents of a good first-aid kit should include, but are not limited to, the following.

Prescriptions, OTCs and other

Highly recommended:

  • Thermometer – reporting & tracking fever
  • Extra Epi-Pen (if you have Rx) – severe allergic reactions
  • Prescription medications – watch refill dates and contact us if you need transfer
  • Extra contact lenses or glasses
  • Topical antibiotic cream – decrease infection risk for cuts, abrasions
  • Instant Wound Seal – cuts
  • Hydrocortisone cream – helps redness and itching
  • Acetaminophen – pain reliever/head and body aches
  • Ibuprofen – fever/pain/inflammation
  • Burn free gel – minor burn treatment (aloe vera)

Recommended:

  • Benadryl tablets – allergy
  • Melatonin – sleep aid, if needed
  • Saline nasal spray – opens stuffy nose; moisturizes
  • Cough/Cold meds – decongestant/expectorant; cough suppression; cold prevention/treatment (Zicam)
  • Antacid (Pepto or Tums) – stomach gas
  • Immodium AD – diarrhea, temporary relief
  • Sunscreen – Sun protection

General Supplies

Highly recommended:

  • Face Masks (cloth or disposable) – prevents spread of infection; have extras on hand
  • Hand Sanitizers > 70% alcohol – extra for room/purse/backpack
  • Band-Aids (3 sizes) – cuts and protection of site
  • Alcohol wipes – sterilizing
  • First aid deck of cards – quick medical reference

Recommended:

  • Ace Bandage Sprain – support, until further evaluation, if needed
  • Gauze and medical tape – to stop bleeding, until further evaluation, if needed
  • Tweezers – remove splinters
  • Latex or non-latex gloves – protection; for simple wound care
  • Nail Clippers – hang nails
  • Small scissors
  • Emergency whistle – help signal
  • Ear plugs – improve sleep
  • Eye mask – relaxation and sleep
  • Small flashlight – safety
